New Years Resolution: Keep A Clean Home

New Years Resolutions for Cleaning, Organizing and Streamlining Your Home

Every year when January rolls around you vow to lose weight, save money or spend more time with family and friends. But what goals do you set for your home? In the spirit of new beginnings, we’ve come up with some resolutions that will make your home a more beautiful, efficient, clean and green place in the coming year.

Clean Room By Room

New Year’s is a perfect time to do a deep cleanse of your home. Take it room by room, making sure to tackle the rooms that have the highest foot traffic first. Scrub, vacuum, rinse and repeat until your home looks like brand new again.

Make the Switch to Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

Many of the most common household cleaners for your countertops, bathroom, laundry and more are terrible for the environment and your health. A great resolution to make in the new year is to swap out these harmful products for healthier options. Looking to make the switch? Clear Your Surfaces

Start with the flat surfaces in your home. Coffee tables, nightstands, dressers, desks, and kitchen countertops are all breeding grounds for clutter. Pick one surface first — the one that makes you stressed just looking at it — and clear everything off. Before you start adding items back to it, pick up each one and determine whether or not you want to keep it.

Clean During Commercial Breaks.

Or during Hulu ads. Or while you’re waiting for hot water to boil or your Uber to arrive. The point is: There are so many small tasks you can take care of when you have a couple minutes to spare.

Purge Your Spaces

Cleaning is always a great place to start, but creating real change in your home will require you to take it a step further and purge some of the things you don’t need. At first, this can seem a little daunting. Look at it is way: If something hasn’t seen the light of day for an entire year (or more), then you’ve spent an entire year proving to yourself that you don’t really need it. The important part about this step is to be methodical. Don’t just start ripping open closets and drawers and pulling everything out. You’ll wear yourself out much sooner than you think, and the pile of things that will end up sitting on the floor is more likely to discourage than encourage you. Instead, use the same plan you had when cleaning and go one room at a time. The process will take a little longer, but it will be much more manageable and far more likely to reach completion. Ask yourself two important questions:

  • Do I love this item?
  • Do I use it regularly?

If the word “no” pops into your head, set the item aside to trash or donate. Take note of what you need to replace, too. If your sauté pan is all scratched up, make a new note in your phone under “Kitchen Purchases” so next time you’re at the store or browsing online it will be easy to focus on your needs.

Add Fresh Flowers

This may sound like a little thing, but you’ll be surprised at the impact that fresh flowers can have on each and every room of your home. Florals are among the least expensive makeovers you can bring to a space. Finding the right colors, heights and arrangements can really complement the existing décor in your rooms. And the right plants can do anything from cleaning the air to providing at-home aromatherapy to lift your mood or help you relax.

Make your bed every day.

No matter what. Do it as soon as you get up, and feel free to ditch your top sheet if that makes life easier.

Tidy a Room Before You Leave It

Fold your throw blanket and fluff the pillows on your sofa before you leave the living room. Stow away your beauty products after you finish getting ready in the bathroom. Toss your papers and take your coffee mug to the sink when you stop working at your desk. Basically, always leave a room cleaner than when you walked into it.

When You Walk in the Door . . .

Put everything that is brought into your house away immediately. (And, yes, the recycling bin is a viable option for that junk mail.) Keep your on-the-go items—coat, bag, keys, et cetera—in one place. And if you have a second story, always take something that needs to go up every time you walk upstairs.

Put your clothes away every night

Before your crawl into bed, put your clothes away instead of tossing them on the nearest chair to “deal with in the morning” (let’s be real: you won’t deal with it in the morning). And don’t just put your pants and shirt on a random shelf — take the extra 20 seconds to fold them or hang them back up neatly.
