We know…you want your clothes to come out of your dryer feeling clean, static free, and smelling great. The usual way to liven up your clothes during the dry cycle is to throw in a handful of dryer sheets. However, if you’re concerned about the health and safety of your family members, you might want to stay away from conventional dryer sheets. Dryer sheets contain chemicals known to be toxic to people after sustained exposure and may be responsible for irritating your allergies and inflaming your asthma.
What are dryer sheets made of, anyway?
Dryer sheets are relatively simple products, generally made of a polyester sheet that’s been covered in a fabric softener chemical and—usually—fragrance chemicals. The amount of fragrance used in dryer sheets can be significant, representing up to 10% of the contents of the product! These chemicals rub off the dryer sheet and coat clothing in a slimy layer that has the effect of making your clothes feel softer.
Not only does fabric softener not do what it promises exactly, but it also prevents the fabrics from functioning the way they’re designed. With regular use of dryer sheets, activewear becomes less breathable, children’s clothing becomes less flame-retardant, and towels become less absorbent. Since fabric softeners are designed to stay in your clothes for extended periods of time, chemicals can seep out gradually and be inhaled or absorbed directly through the skin.
Dryer Sheets are Unsustainable
Dryer sheets are single-use – which means that we’re throwing them away after each round of laundry!
Chemicals from dryer sheets can build up and clog your dryer’s lint screen, making your dryer a lot less efficient.
In addition, dryer sheets are totally unnecessary for actually making our clothes cleaner, so they’re an easily-preventable source of exposure to toxic chemicals!
