After two days for getting deals, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is a day for giving back. In dozens of towns, cities, regions and states from Alaska to Maine, and Charlotte NC to Dallas TX, people are embracing this day as an opportunity to raise money for local nonprofits, schools and arts organizations; run food and clothing drives; teach children about philanthropy; encourage acts of kindness; collaborate with their neighbors; and celebrate generosity.

In 2015, nonprofits raised more than $117 million online on #GivingTuesday to help make the world a better place in countless ways. Much more was generated offline and through donations of time and other resources. People participated in #GivingTuesday activities in 71 countries around the globe last year, and this year, participating countries include Australia, Brazil, Kenya, Slovenia, Tanzania, the UK and more.

1908 Brands is making primary donations on #GivingTuesday to Leave No Trace and Sheep Mountain Alliance with plans to increase donations in 2017.

“As a small, grassroots organization working to amplify the voices of the citizens who want to see the San Juan Mountains protected, Sheep Mountain Alliance deeply values the financial support we receive from 1908 Brands and 1% for the Planet. It makes a critical difference in ensuring that we can devote our time and resources to protecting your public lands,” Says Lexi Tuddenham of Sheep Mountain Alliance.

“Companies make dozens of decisions every day and try to do what’s best for our planet and people, before profits. Yes profits are important, but they are not everything” says Steve Savage, CEO of 1908 Brands.

“This shopping season, consumers can support the companies that support our planet. When you support them, you send a strong signal to the rest of the world that your money speaks for the planet. When you vote with your dollar you tell the rest of the market you care and so should they,” says Steve Savage.

#GivingTuesday was born at 92nd Street Y (92Y), a community and cultural center in New York in 2012. Since then, people from different backgrounds, cultures and regions around the world have helped to create a global day of giving that reflects 92Ys commitment to strengthening communities and repairing the world.

“The tremendous response to #GivingTuesday over the last five years has been both humbling and inspiring,” said Henry Timms, Executive Director of 92Y. “We have seen countless examples of communities coming together to address challenges. Giving is a powerful reminder of our shared humanity, and the willingness of so many to participate and elevate giving is reason for celebration, even with lots of work still to be done.”

Boulder Clean chooses child-resistant flexible packaging for new Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent Packs

The packaging design for Boulder Clean Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent Packs shines a spotlight on child safety, using a stand-up pouch with a zipper closure that little hands can’t open.

Boulder Clean, a 1908 Brands company, worked with Presto Products Co. and Accredo Packaging Inc. to design the package. Accredo supplies the pre-made pouch, and Presto supplies the Slider-Guard child-resistant zipper.

To open the zipper, consumers must align a tab to a notch, then press down on the tab and slide it to the open position (see a video here). Adults can easily open and close the package, but children lack the manual coordination to work the zipper.

The pouch, which holds 34 single-dose liquid packs, is made from non-recyclable, reverse-printed PET laminated to a coextruded nylon/polyethylene sealant web. The single-dose packs are a new offering from Boulder Clean; the product will launch in December 2016 and is the first natural cleaning product to use the Slider-Guard child-resistant zipper.

Carly Marriott, director of operations for Boulder Clean, answers a few questions about the package.

5 questions with Steve Savage, CEO of 1908 Brands – Daily Camera 2016

If there’s a first family of green business in Boulder County, it’s the Savages.

Steve Savage for 15 years ran Boulder’s Eco Products, which he founded with his dad, Kent Savage, who himself served as chairman of Eco-Cycle. Eco Products was one of the first companies to offer such items as compostable paper plates and plastic cups.

His current company, 1908 Brands, is named for the year his great-grandfather, William Kent, donated the 300 acres of land that became California’s Muir Woods National Park to the federal government.

But now, Steve Savage is chasing an even bigger legacy: becoming “the next Boulder Brands,” which in November sold for nearly $1 billion.

1908’s recent purchase of Paleo snack maker Wholly Bites last month kicked off what Savage hopes will be a frenzied year of acquisitions. We sat down with Savage to learn more about his ambitious plans:
